Basic Bible Truths Lesson One, Part Two: The Bible is the ONLY Revelation

I hope you enjoyed Lesson 1, Part 1 as well as the Q and A’s. This lesson continues in the same topic of Who Wrote the Bible? We know that God wrote the Bible through men he inspired. The Word is completely God-breathed and is the complete communication between Him and us in written form. In this lesson we will explore more about the Bible and the true Revelation that it is. Enjoy!

The Bible-The Only Revelation

As we study God’s word we need to truly understand that this is God’s authoritative word. He made this revelation to us to reveal things about himself. The Bible is the complete source of His revealed truths, and it speaks for God as no other document can.

The Bible is an amazing source of truth for us. It is the best way that we truly get to know the heart of the Lord that we serve. God has given us no other revelations but the Bible. But that is not to say that we do not continue to be able to learn from others who study His word. God makes himself known to those who pray, study, and “wait upon him”. Along with this truth it is important to remember that God’s truth is always revealed through the world, never apart from it. The Revelation is complete and we have this book that is a true blessing to allow us to grow closer to our Lord.

This is Something Different

As stated above, in this present day God is only revealing Himself through the written Word. In previous days, God revealed himself in different ways. He used dreams, visions, and personal appearances to the prophets as demonstrated in the select verses below.

“At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”” 1 Kings 3:5

“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him “Where are you?”” Genesis 3: 7, 8

Today though, we get to experience Him in a different way. Through the complete and beautiful picture of His Word and with the Holy Spirit living inside of those who accept Christ. Hebrews 1:1-2 tells us that he is currently speaking in a different manner than days past.

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son… Hebrews 1:1-2

A change has clearly taken place and that is in how God is communicating. How lucky we are that we have His Word as our daily study guide and we can draw closer to Him through his truths, promises, learn from Jesus’ life and also the parables.

Jesus Christ-The Complete Revelation

God, in Christ Jesus, has now given a completed revelation. The Old Testament revelations were not complete. They did speak of God but they pictured Him as being far away and not well understood.

Truly You are God, who hide Yourself, O God of Israel, the Savior! Isaiah 45:15

But now that Christ has come and lived His life on earth we have the complete revelation. We can truly get to know God because we have the story of the life of Jesus. Christ is the way we get to know God and truly understand more about Him. Also, Christ’s sacrifice allowed us to be closer to God through the Holy Spirit. In order for us to know more about what God is like we need to know the Christ of the Bible.

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? John 14:9

(speaking of Jesus) who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Hebrews 1:3

No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him John 1:18

Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit make the trinity that is God in three persons. One is not whole without the others, but when we know Jesus we know God. It is an amazing phenomenon that truly I don’t believe the human mind can fully comprehend.

Nothing More is Needed

The Bible is true as well as being complete. We have the full picture of God’s attitude on sin, prophecies for the last days, a beautiful picture of Jesus’ life among other thought-provoking verses. The Bible is very clear about the significance of Jesus’ death on the Cross.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life John 3:16

By the cross the Bible declares that God is just and Christ has borne every penalty and judgment against the sinner. He can be freely forgiven and God is righteous.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forebearance God has passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 3:23-26

We All Sin

Powerful verses. We are all sinners and fall short. This we know and we feel our failures daily to some extent. The pursuit of perfection over progress and growth is futile. Knowing that God passes over the sins that were previously committed because of Christ’s perfect sacrifice is a powerful truth. I think it is hard to think about how God sees us. He sees us in this unique way as blameless and forgiven. You can rest in that knowledge that Christ has made that amazing sacrifice and we can turn to Him and know Him we can be forgiven of past transgressions and walk forward trying to do better and follow Him.

The Bible as Our Guidebook

We need Jesus, and we need His word, the Bible to grow and thrive and get to know God. The Bible is this life book of instructions, guidance, love letters, and a picture of God’s will and plan. No, it does not read like a choose your own adventure laying out the consequences one way or another but it reveals and gives light and wisdom which leads us as believers to make better decisions.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path Psalm 119:105

You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore Psalm 16:11

The Bible is our guidebook. We as Christians need the Bible for proper conduct and for serving God.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3: 16-17

The Bible is the sufficient and final Word of God. There may be a need for more understanding of the truths given, and greater knowledge of them, but the revelation itself is final, complete and sufficient.

The Bible is THE Word of God

If we said that there is a continuing message from God, that would make the Bible a word of God not the Word of God. We can trust the Bible and rely on its authority.

If there were extra-Biblical revelations how would we know what to believe? We need to stand firmly on His Word as His revelation and believe what the above verses tell us about the importance and significance of the Bible.

Conclusion

We need not be in doubt about the authoritative nature of the Bible that God has written and given to us. Thank the Lord for the Bible.

Concluding Prayer

Lord, I thank you for Your Word. I thank you that we need only look to this one book to learn more about You. Others may teach us and help us understand Your Word but it is Your final Word and Your authoritative word. I rest in knowing that the Bible is Your written revelation and the way you reveal Yourself to us. Thank you for the sacrifice of Jesus and the price he paid for our sins. Thank you that we can come to know You. I pray for understanding of Your Word to have wisdom to follow You and help others understand Your Word as well. I praise You Lord.

Amen

Sincerely,

Christine G.
