Basic Bible Truths Lesson One, Part One Summary

Lesson One, Part One: Who Wrote the Bible?

Basic Bible Truths Lesson One, Part One-Who Wrote the Bible?

Have you ever really thought about who wrote the Bible? Growing up in church I always was told God wrote the Bible but never considered more details. Well this lesson will give you a little more information and hopefully encourage you to really consider this book a gift from God. Enjoy!

The Bible is a Revelation from God

How can we tell that the Bible is not just another book written by men? Is it the “Word of God”? The truth is that God is the author of this powerful book that we have been given. First of all, the Bible is a revelation from God. It is a revelation about God and a revelation from God. We see this fact indicated in Scripture over and over. God used Men that believed in Him to author this book that reveals God to us. God communicates with us through His Word and wants us to learn about Him.

“For the propechy came not at any time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” I Peter 1:21

The Meaning of Revelation

Revelation: revelation is defined as an act of revealing or communicating divine truth. Something that is revealed by God to humans

God must reveal to us His word so that the veil may be lifted and the fog cleared away. Otherwise these are things we would not know about. Think about your own life. You may have circumstances which seem foggy and unclear. You might wonder why an opportunity didn’t work out or why timing was wrong or why you were sent one direction in your life; possibly later on God revealed part of His beautiful plan and made it more clear why those things occurred to set you up for something in His plan for you.

If we all had our way we would get the things we desired on our timeline; however, God knows the whole story cover to cover and how one thing would never lead to another if we had what we originally wanted. It is beautiful and amazing and at times confusing and frustrating. But God gives us His word and His promises and that is a powerful tool as we live this life.

1 Corinthians 2:9-10 But as it is written: “eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

God reveals Himself to us through the Holy Spirit and His Word which is the Bible.

Revelation is a Necessity

Knowledge of God must come by revelation. It is not just one way to know God, it is the only way.

For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:11

Man by himself can never get to know God. We have to invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts and lives in order to know about God and His ways and thoughts. This surely does not mean we become as great as God. We are creatures and He is the Creator!

Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty? Job 11:7

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

The Lord declares that His thoughts and ways are higher than our thoughts and ways but he does reveal himself to us and through His Spirit we can know Him.

Old Testament Writers and The Bible

Over 1500 times the writes of the Old Testament declare that what they wrote came directly from God. They state that many times that these are not just their words and opinions rather, they are God’s words. A few examples of these statements include:

“Thus says the Lord…” Exodus 4:22

“The word of the Lord came saying…” Jeremiah 1:4

“The Lord saith…” Jeremiah 3:6

“And God said…” Genesis 8:15

They used the pens of men to write the words of God and made sure to continually give the Lord the glory for His revelations to us.

Christ and the Bible

In the days of Christ, He refers to the Bible as the word of God. He quoted Old Testament scripture and asked the Sadducees “have you not read that which was spoken to you by God?” God’s own Son, Jesus Christ tells us that God wrote the Bible.

Jesus quoted and obeyed the Bible and declared that not even the smallest letter in the law (Bible) would ever pass away.

For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled Matthew 5:18

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away Matthew 24:35

Therefore, we know the Bible reveals the past, present, and future for us and will not pass away.

New Testament Writers and the Bible

The New Testament writers further confirm that these are the teachings and writings of God.

For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit II Peter 1:21

Peter tells us that the men that wrote the Old Testament wrote not as they willed but by the Holy Spirit.

Paul also believed the writings of the Bible and confirmed to Timothy that God, not man, was responsible for these writings

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. II Timothy 3:16-17

God’s word equips us, trains us, corrects us, and is our doctrine. Every bit of it.

Scripture in this passage is capitalized, to the writers of the New Testament these were one and the same. The New Testament authors were deeply rooted in their faith. They knew God and the Scripture were so interchangeable that writing God or Scriptures was saying the same thing. In the verses where Scripture is stated as the subject, God can be placed there and it gives the same meaning.

For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth” Romans 9:17

Conclusion

So who wrote the Bible? In conclusion, God has given us the Bible. He caused it to be written. Furthermore, He has been around for all of time. God  chose to reveal Himself to us through this written word. Until God comes again we have His Word and prayer to learn more and communicate with Him. Men can be used to teach His word and that is wonderful that we can help each other understand our Lord better. We can use that to form community and draw closer to Him. Men wrote the words physically but they are God-breathed and God revealed them to these authors.
